Boater cross is a form of competitive river running which has taken the world by storm. Typically 3 or more kayakers go head to head in a race with very few if any rules. The majority of the events worldwide are by invitation only but there has been exceptional growth in the past few years in large-scale events to cater for all levels.
Competition
An important feature of the Irish freestyle scene are the various competitions that take place around the country. The events provide a great opportunity to meet other paddlers and to compete. Some of the competitions are organised as fun events where everyone is encouraged to participate. The more serious events are aimed at those looking to move to the international level.
Freestyle
Freestyle kayaking is a white water discipline where the participants perform a range of arobatic tricks and manoeuvres on a standing feature such as a wave or hole. The discipline is enjoyed by many as a recreational sport and at the top level by those participating in competitions both nationally and internationally.
ICU
Irish Canoe Union (ICU) is the governing body for kayaking in Ireland.
