The screen of my Pentax Optio W30 got badly damaged. don’t think warranty covers it but still following that one up.

Does anyone have experience getting water proof cameras fixed? I believe that it has to be done specially, as if the seal isn’t done properly the camera won’t be water proof anymore.

If so anyone have any recommendations of who to use?

Thanks

Tiernan

I'd suspect the cost of replacing the screen wouldn't be too far off the price of a new camera.

Well normal when you brake any camera. The best thing is to send it back to the manufacture as they know how that camera was built and can reseal it.

What you need to find is a registered pentax deal that is willing to be your go between, between you and pentax (best chance is a proper camera shop). It might be no harm in contacting pentax and seeing if they will deal with you directly.

As far as I know there is no professional camera service place left in Ireland, Well that's what the camera shop tell me down here in cork, then again you might find a place in Dublin that does its own servicing. But if they have the equipment to reseal a camera or not is another thing.

Then as oisin said it comes down to economics.

They will normal give you the cost of how much it will cost to repair it and if its economical or not. Then it come down to two question, 1. is the camera working perfectly in every other way and 2. Would I get a similar camera for the same price.

John is spot on with this.  It's economics!  If you're in Dublin, bring it to Conn's cameras behind Brown Thomas.  They will give you some good advice and options.  They might be able to send it out for an estimate for you.  Conn's are pricey, I'll warn you up front, but they offer excellent service and won't screw you.  Generally though, screens are not repairable and if the seal is gone you can probably expect some electronics / optics damage too.  Sorry to be pesimistic.  If you decide to replace, you could do a lot worse than consider the Olympus u570...water proof, shock proof and all round a great little camera!  Best of luck...Smile

Hey T,

Norway 2007 - Pimps and Hos night..... Emmett "Bollox face" Curran heads out to the ULSU minibus/place to sleep for the night for some beer swilling (cheaper than the bar) and trips (probably over a ho- actually, probably into a ho) and tries to save himself by putting out the hand that was carrying my Optio W20.

With enough damage to make me wonder if it was still waterproof I sent it back to Pentax who quoted a reasonable price for repair so it was worth doing.

What they do is contact you and tell you how much it'll cost. They give you a number that you can ring which is an automated line that you basically tell them whether you want them to proceed with the repair.

It's a good system and it's not like how Sony do it which is a minimum standard charge set at a silly level (£175 or so and that doesn't cover parts SFAIK)

If you like the camera and haven't been tempted by something else then it could be well worth at least finding out a price.

Tony,

How did you get in contact with them in the first place? If you have an email or number for Pentax that would be great.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Olympus baxtards! Had the first waterproof one, the one that went to  5m underwater .... my arse. Busted while travelling, same story ... half an hour in surf and got water in there. Brought it to a crowd in Buenos Aires and they raired it in 2 days for free, they said that it happened a lot with them. Couldn't guarantee the seal though so they said not to bring it into water. Bought the newer version that went to 10m in new zealand, lost the first one ... within 4 months and the second time it had been in water the new one dies, same problem water in there ... brought it to repair place in kuala lumpur and they said it was my fault, they wouldn't fix it! And there was 3 people came in with the exact same camera, forked the same way! I'll kill them! Any word on your camera Emmett?
