Not so Danger Mouse - Fri, 2008-09-05 20:36

I just had to go see the Dargle after todays rain.  She was running @ just over 2 blocks and must have been traveling at 30 mph, I only went to the exit of the gorge. A pretty cool site, just about all washed out, absolutely no rocks. Did anyone see, or better still get pics or footage of the main drop?  Now I'm well aware she can run much higher, but I just couldn't help myself getting excited with the prospect of being able to paddle the Dargle at different levels as she drops off. What are people's thoughts of the optimum lever to run her at?  You know when it's jucy enough to get over most rocks, but before stopper turn terminal?

Later,

DM

As far as I know it stays very washed out til 4 blocks. Eddy above falls gone and a hike over hill to inspect falls required.

I've never run it higher than 4 blocks ( 4 blocks now being the old 3 blocks ) but I've been told a lot of the big stoppers flush through.

Between 4 and 5 blocks its very sustained and most of the regulars stoppers are sticky with a few added extra ones.

Swims long and boat recovery difficult at best.

Eddy directly above falls has reappeared below 4 blocks but hard to make as most of it flushes through.

It's very pushy between 4 an 5 and a good assessment of your own and groups abilities is required.

When it gets closer to 5 blocks it's just class but still not for the faint hearted.

At todays levels a lot of the big old lumber already in the river will have moved around and it's likely it has been joined by a lot of new stuff with all the wind that came with that rain so inspect everything.

If your used to the usual 6 block run and comfortable go for the 5 blocks but think twice before setting out on a 4 block run IMO.

Is it just fuppin great the quality of paddling we're getting this last while

Anyone near or run the Dargle today. What level is it at today?

Thinking of having a go at it tommorrow. If anyone was on it today was there any new hazards or shit to look out for ?

Thanks in advance

Thanks a mil. I'd say it'll be worth a look in the morning alright.

Where you walking or paddling ? Don't like the sound not seeing much beyond the falls. Undecided

Hi Guys,

Ran the Dargle this Morning it was just under 6 blocks, nice but not very high. Tonnes of straw hanging out of the trees about 6 foot above the water level shows how high it was!

No problems, one big tree well before the gorge but its not a problem and its really easy to see.

There is a tree in a small vertical drop river left further down but it has been there for years and there is an easy line river right.

Enjoy

Brian

The Straw made the place kind of eerie alright.

I think myself and Colm might have been first on the river this morn.

Definatly stopped to inspect a bit more than usual but surprisingly very little debree in river.

Even the half of wooden bridge that got washed away ended about six feet up the bank 500 meters downstream.

The tree spanning the river at the water pipe seems a bit lower but that probably just my imagination. It'll only cause a problem in high water anyway.

Water wise you didn't miss much this morning though Mike. Anenmoe was probably the best show in town.

That's mad for a stretch that's so hard to get running I've got on it once in July, August and September.

Class stretch of river and no trees to boot. It'll be worth a look after work on Tuesday anyway. Have to work out how i can get out of taxi to Kids hobbies run Innocent
