Ireland's only competitor in the slalom competitions of the Beijing Olympics, Eoin Rheinisch, goes on Monday at 09:22:30 AM and 11:14:30 AM Irish time. Semi-finals and finals are on Tuesday.

It's on the telly, I suppose, but if you're stuck in work you can still catch it streamed by RTE (Ireland only):

He's qualified for the semis

15th and 15 went through.

He hit a green gate on the way down and looked pissed off as he was crossing the finish line so if things go his way in the semis he could be well up there.

From the RTE webpage...

Eoin Rheinisch has qualified for the semi-finals of the canoeing event, but was helped by a great deal of good fortune after two average runs.

Rheinisch posted 88.52 seconds in his first attempt and needed to improve in the next heat.

He did just that, but a two second penalty put his place in the qualification places in jeopardy.

But one of the leading competitors, Scott Parsons, did the Dubliner a huge favour only minutes later.

Parsons was on course to qualify in the top three but just near the end he missed a gate and incurred a 50 second penalty.

This put him out of the top 16 and Rheinisch's place in the semi-final was secured.

They take place tomorrow and he will have to improve greatly to be in medal contention. He is first off tomorrow at around 8.30 am Irish time.

Rheinisch makes the final with a clean run! He qualifies 10th of ten with a time just less than three seconds off the leader. Final is at 10:15 AM today.

Another clean run in the final, posted a good time, and hangs in there for fourth spot. Only pushed out of the medals by the last competitor to go. A fairly impressive result considering he was the slowest from the semi-finals and results carry forward.

Congratulations to the Salmon Leap paddler. That's wildly impressive stuff.

As many of you will know, Eoin did Ireland proud at the olympics. He truly deserves all the praise and support he gets, and is a nice fella to boot. What you may not know is that i coach slalom for free 1 day a week (usually wednesdays and usually wwkc), and will be open for business again when i return from holidays in mid september. All welcome, and i'll post on the board again when we get moving but keep it in mind...
