Try buy a second hand Bic Mini Mal.......... fairly stable board that is also durable.

Get something longish as these are easier to learn on. something around 7foot six inches or so.

oh ya, make sure you look cool, this is by far the most important piece of advice you can get as a begginer surfer.

get a 9 foot board you can then surf without lineups as your out the back while a load are trying to catch the high steep waves

compare a good average day on a bic mini mal 7 foot 3 and catching 5-10 good runs to a day on a 9 footer catching 20 to 30+ waves and then not having to fight back out through all the mush

thus conserving energy + time to have more fun

get a 543 wetsuit and a rashvest with inbuilt hoody not a seperate as they don't work half as good

RIOT,PYRANHA ETC BRAND NAME STILL A KAYAK

MiniMal is a brand name same as NSP and Circle One but is known for their beginner boards that are of a certain construction (tough) while you can have other brands such as JP etc which deal more for advanced short boards of light construction eg squeeze with your thumb and index finger and they will crunch.(this is why surfer don't like to hit anything)

7' 3"   7' 10" are common sizes

start googling, irishsurfer.com is a good site + magicseaweed for your weather wind needs to be offshore to justify a long haul across the country generally as helful as kayaker those who give out don't surf so don't bother with them.

A fun board perfect if you have a young family etc if your gonna get addicted then buy a decent long board 7' 10" or above. Don't get sucked into buying a short board as the waves needed to surf them are far and few between for a day tripper. if your going to live beside a decent break then knock yourself out.

 best of luck and enjoy.

Sorry to correct you there JIMEB but you are incorrect Mini Mal (mimi malibu) is a style of board. such as fish, longboard, thruster, malibu and the like.

"Mini-mal surfboards are more difficult to learn to surf on than longboards, but much easier than learning to surf on a shortboard. However many surfers learn with a mini-mal board and continue to regularly surf on it after becoming more competent.

Mini-mal surf boards fit into most cars, and so are easier to transport that longboards.

Mini-mals are often called funboards as they are easier and are much more forgiving in poor surf conditions.

The mini-mal is a shorter version of the longboard, or Malibu surfboard, from where the mini-mal gets its name. Mini-mals have characterises that make it handle like a shortboard."

Guy who want's to take up surfing, if your kinda the average size person who is average weight and average fitness. Its a safe bet a bic mini mal 7'10" would do you for your entire surfing career. And Brand mimi mal will do you. NSP have a nice range without crazy prices. If you look up the surf shop in lachinch they selll second hand boards and well give you bucket loads of advice.

If you take one or two lessons it will improve your success rate no end.

If you are not "Joe average" as I described let me know you height/weight genral fitness level and swiming ability and I will tell you what I can.

I'd suggest the 7 9 mini mal natural surf providing you are not overly heavy.

Take off epoxy boards are really nice and look cool. They are the top of the tree as far as starter boards go, they preform really well. They are not known to be as tough as the NSP boards but I wouldn't worry too much about that unless you plan on surfing reef breaks before you ready.

The 7 10 mini mal should do you well, what I would say if you are the wrong side of 100 + kg the 8ft will have more volume in it so will be easier for you to learn. Once you have the skill volume becomes less and less of an issue.

http://www.irishsurfer.com/

check out the fourm & classified sections out, unlike kayaking there are hundreds if not thousands of boards to choose from so you might not find the model you want available on the second hand market.

Best of luck with your search.
