Curragower levels

Loads of people have been asking me ..is Curragower working yet?

Well.. the answer in no. Have look at the photos [1, 2] , taken on the 29th of October.

It'l need a few weeks of steady rain to bring it back up.

With all the dought are we in for a deluge at some stage? will it go from one extreme to the other bone dry to too high for months like last yr!?!? Maybe there wont be any rain at all! maybe they are already holding back for the varsities?

How are the works going on the mound, any good pics of the new slip and stuff??

and now that its so dry someone go out there drill a mighty big hole in the rocks and rook up some kinda rope ferry on system like at nile special and the champs at bus eater recently for when its impossible to ferry on. we dont want to be wasting time walking around when the levels do finally start to come up. Im so bored of this weather!

The bund work is going steadly. One problem though, there are bits of reinforcing steel sticking up in places that will need to be removed. The site foreman is aware of the problem and has agreed to clear them.

The first slip is amazingly non-slippy, mabye too non-slippy. The other one isn't built yet.

Looks like it'll be another few months before its ready. I'll try put up photos of the progress next week.

One other note, the car park beside the Curragower bar is owned by Limerick City Council.

Not really sure if this would be such a good idea on Gower , Even though the ferry is tough, it can be done, it would be just a waste of time sticking a tow on there. Also the Dam wouldnt be holding back water for the varsities this early, i think they only start holding back two to three weeks before the event.

Its slightly higher, but still not up. Another week of rain and it should work.

It was working well yesterday, I was there but had no boat or gear :( And there was no one at all on the water. Hopefully it'll stay working now for a while!

Enjoy! Pity us students have exams :(

Actually,

Myself, Andy "Big Mac" Mullins* and that friendly boogie board guy had a nice short sunday session on the wave (not having any exams to pretend to be studying for). The level was "good 'n' steep".

However, access to the water is very difficult due to ongoing works on the bund which will be complete in Feb '08.

If you do get an opportunity to paddle the wave, take the time to scout out your access and egress, avoiding the construction site.

Cheers,

Ross

* "Big Mac" refers to the fancy freestyle kayaking move Andy is now favouring. It does not in any way refer to his odd interest in Big Mac hamburgers as developed by the MacDonalds brand chain of fast food restaurants. He also likes puppies and long walks in the rain with his new dhmtb which he calls Jessica.

Quick fact - Paul O'Connell wears Andy Mullins Pyjamas.

Is Gower working this weekend? And if so at what approx times and days? Couldn't make it down to the competition last weekend :( and I'm gong to be in Clare all weekend so was wondering if its worth bringing my boat along with me. The surf looks like its all going to be blown out. Got on at a beach at home last weekend and only caught a few waves before being blown over a mile down the beach by that bloody north wind!! Had to hide my boat behind rocks to stop it being blown away and had to walk back to the car!

Its back down to low levels for the last few days. The island in the middle was uncovered yesterday.  Its not going to work until after loads of rain.
